Today I struggled to think of something to write that was not parochial and would be of interest to everyone but I could not get past a local issue that is really annoying me.
Here in Australia, like the rest of the world, we are going through difficult financial times and in it’s wisdom, the Federal Government has come up with yet another financial stimulation package, which they hope will kick start some spending and prevent us from an even deeper recession. The Government is sending out cheques for $900.00 to each taxpayer who earned $100,000 or less last financial year and lesser amounts to those who earned more. Non taxpayers or those on disability or unemployment benefits will receive nothing. Is it just me or do others agree , that anyone making 100K does not need an additional $900.00?
Personally, I know of individuals who are on disability and unemployment benefits, who have had to restrict spending on food and medication, just so they can make their rent(even then they are sharing with several others) due to massive increases and a limited rental market. These men and women are the ones who should be receiving the stimulous package, so they can at least put some food in the pantry or freezer, pay for medication, rent and utilities.
The last stimulous package before Christmas( again, those most in need were omitted) was a complete fizzer and did very little to stimulate the economy. The one area it did stimulate was the gambling industry with much of the money going into slot machines, lottery tickets and the racing industry.
The Government should be assisting business , so they can retain or recruit staff and looking after the most vulenerable members of our society, not placing the country into massive debt through these latest handouts, which will have a minimal effect on out economy. There is no such thing as a free lunch and it is us, the taxpayer who is going to foot the bill for this Government’s stupidity!!!!!!
